The purpose of this website is to encourage you to provide hiking sticks at the start of trails for those who want to walk the wilds and would appreciate a little support. Such gestures are particularly appreciated by those of us that are past the spring of youth and athleticism and are both stickless and pocket knifeless having just arrived fresh from a plane journey!
I hope that such little contributions will both help others to enjoy the wilderness and also encourage more constructive attitudes towards the natural beauty of our world.
In preparing a stick, use only one that has been dead long enough for the bark to start to peel. This will ensure that it is seasoned, light and easy to clean. 1" to 1 1/2" diameter and elbow to shoulder hight long is ideal. DO NOT cut down any living sapling, tree or branch! In the process of finding a suitable stick DO NOT disturb any plants, animal habitats, or natural processes.
Identify your stick with your initials and an inscription, for example:
Stick # CBJ 101
Enjoy this stick today
Leave it for someone else tomorrow
Give a stick and track it at
WALKTHEWILDS.ORG
(Use a black ball pen, it lasts well)
If you let me know where you have left a stick or where you have found and enjoyed an existing stick I will attempt to keep track of them and publish the results on this web site.
